Next Exercise

Describe a late-night walk around my block.

Dialog Exercise #2

I want to work on dialog again, so this next exercise will be dialog-heavy. Rules:

  • Three sections: an in-depth conversation, a shorter section that deals with the main character’s thoughts on the previous conversation, and a new conversation with a third person and the main character later
  • Only two people conversing at a time
  • First person perspective
  • Very loosely based on a conversation I had recently with my roommate and thoughts that have been running through my head

New exercise

In honor of the crime story book that my girlfriend gave me for my birthday, I want to try a light crime story. Requirements:

  • Third person
  • Main character is relatively calm and experienced
  • Main character is resorting to burglary in an affluent town

That’s all I’ve got.

Practice makes perfect

A quote by Stephen King perfectly sums up my feelings:

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

Hell yes. So basically I’m going to try and churn out a lot of stuff to put on this site, and hope that over time I start to see improvement. I am setting up goals for myself, sort of like exercises in writing. The first one has a few rules:

  • Takes place at a party
  • Main character isn’t terribly comfortable in social situations like the aforementioned party
  • No overarching morals or points to the story other than simply telling the story of a shy guy going to a frat party

That’s what I have. Let’s see where it takes me.

Soon…

This weekend I’ll be writing and posting something. I decided to take a step back from my promise in my first entry. No 10-page work. I want to do writing exercises before I get into serious texts. I have some ideas jotted down for short fiction stories, but…I tried and failed when writing them. I definitely need to just get my feet wet.

First entry will be nothing significant. Just a conversation or situation between two people, I expect.
